More Military Doom and Gloom from AP
Amid talk among the mainstream media of a sinking economy in which the elderly must live in vans and cannot afford to drive 35 miles to church on Sundays, the Associated Press did note a drop in unemployment from 2006 to 2007. But even that news was buried in a story about the military and was used to explain trouble had in meeting recruiting goals.
On May 13, an AP story by writer Anne Flaherty used this drop in unemployment to explain that the military is having difficulty recruiting young people. But just a day before, the Associated Press reported that every branch of the military met its recruiting goals for the month of April, some branches even surpassed them. As Warner Todd Huston noted, AP’s Pauline Jelinek reasoned that the military was successful in its recruitment efforts because “other job possibilities” are limited.
Don’t you just hate it when newsrooms can’t agree over which biased meme should rule the day?
In the May 13 story on Senator Jim Webb’s (D-Va.) proposed G.I. Bill reforms and the Pentagon’s opposition to it, Flaherty apparently couldn’t resist the opportunity to express more doom and gloom for the military during this time of a “deeply unpopular” war.
The Pentagon opposes Webb’s overhaul of the G.I. Bill because it allows for eligibility for the G.I. education bill after three years of service which is, according to the Defense Department, too soon. Flaherty wrote, “The Pentagon’s opposition to Webb’s bill underscores the difficulty the military has had in recruiting and retaining an all-volunteer force at a time when it is engaged in a war that is deeply unpopular with the American public.” While the Defense Department does think that eligibility for the G.I. education bill after three years could cause difficulties in retaining service members, the military met all of April’s recruiting goals and is on track to potentially meet growth figures a year early, according to Defense Department spokesman Bryan Whitman.
Furthermore, Flaherty noted that retention rates have been “less troublesome in the military, with the Army and Marine Corps exceeding their goals by large margins in 2006 and staying strong in 2007.” Coming to an end on a sour note, Flaherty went on to say, “Still, the Defense Department is worried that its retention numbers could fall as service members are asked to return repeatedly to Iraq and Afghanistan.”

We’re back!
ok, i know i’ve been a major slacker blogging these past four days…sorry for that. i usually post when the boys go to bed, but now that fred is working so much (leaves the house around 5:00 a.m. doesn’t get home til’ around 8:00 p.m.) it is the only time fred and i have together…..so the blog has suffered. i am going to try and post when cole goes down for his morning nap. they may not be as long because you know who can’t go 5 minutes without my full attention. i may have to pull out the big guns to get it done……….elmo. i hate to use the t.v. as a babysitter, but sometimes it is the only thing that works if you need to do something that requires any thought.cole is even now working on crawling. he virtually has it. he is doing very well with sitting. he can sit for almost 5 minutes….as long as he is playing with something. sometimes alec will come running by, cole will scrutinize and watch him, then forest. he loses his concentration and balance.cole is such a pleasing indulge. when we go shopping or wide of the mark somewhere, i almost forget he is there. he is so easy going. alec is such a nuisance, i think god gave me a reprieve when he gave me cole.we have been doing a 2 week trial on alec. i haven’t entranced him to school or to any indoor play areas for scarcely 2 weeks now. i wanted to assist if he gets sick not being exposed to high embryo areas. knock on wood, he hasn’t. now, i don’t want to keep him in a bubble or anything. i valid wanted to let him recover 100% and have 2 psychoneurotic-free weeks. i will resume all of his average activities next week. we have had some really great weather here, so we have been able to play outside a quantity….which has helped.my mom and dad organize alec this evening and i am planning on going grocery shopping with cole. i will try and transmit some more tomorrow.

Really? You have a hard time figuring out which is more astonishing? I’ll help. The second isn’t astonishing at all. It’s called life. It’s realizing that relying on a parent who could do such a thing would be folly.
Is Demetrius Bell the only guy in the NFL draft who has had little to no contact with their father? I’m going out on a sturdy limb and saying not a chance. Before anyone thinks that’s got anything to do with any racial/socioeconomic issues, I’ll say that I’m in the same boat as those guys, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Certainly there are situations where growing up without a father creates situations that must be overcome. However, not having a father around doesn’t mean you’ve got a lot to overcome in and of itself.
I didn’t have a father growing up. Still don’t. I have a Dad, though, and she did a wonderful job of making me realize that it wasn’t me who had anything to overcome.

Nick Bollea (I’m not going to call him Nick Hogan in this article, since that isn’t his real name) was in court today and the judge handed down sentencing:
Nick Hogan threw himself at the mercy of the judge today in Clearwater, FL in his felony reckless driving case — and he got just a lil’ bit. Hogan was sentenced to eight months in jail, five years’ probation and 500 hours community service, and the judge yanked his license for three years.
The judge also said no drinking for three years…and he also pointed out that not only is Nick underage but he will still be so once the three years is up. He is also to spend one full day in “some positive framework” every month. Not quite sure what that means, but it can’t be a bad thing.

During today’s proceedings, Nick spoke about John Graziano, the former Marine who is now in an almost vegetative state after the horrific accident:
During the hearing, Bollea apologized to Graziano’s family and told them he missed John, whom he regarded as his best friend and older brother.
“No matter what has been said, every day I think about John,” said Bollea. “There will never be a day I forget about this.”
His father Terry (Hulk Hogan) also offered testimony:
Hogan, also known as Terry Bollea, also testified, and said he hoped his son wouldn’t be unfairly punished because of his celebrity status.
“Our whole family will never give up on John,” Hogan said. “And we hope everyone else won’t give up on Nick.”
Hogan said John was practically a member of the family, celebrating birthdays and going on vacation with the Bolleas. John was 17 when he met Nick Bollea and the two became fast friends. John went on to join the Marines and serve in Iraq. He had only recently returned home.
Hogan said his son was devastated by the wreck.
“Being Nick’s father, I’ve noticed a change in his demeanor,” Hogan said. “He’s done a lot of growing up in the last 18 months.”
He also said that Nick is not as he has been portrayed on their “reality” show:
Dressed all in black, including a scarf on his head, Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, urged the judge not to make his son a convicted felon. His plea: Withhold adjudication.
“My son has really, deeply been affected by what occurred in this accident,” Hogan said. “What I don’t want to see happen is another tragedy. Nick is going to have to live with this experience the rest of his life.”
He said the public misunderstands his son because his personality is not what was portrayed on the family’s reality television show, which Hogan said was scripted. Hogan said his son would be sitting at his computer and show producers would ask him to throw water balloons. “Nick is a good person,” Hogan said. “He’s kind. He’s gentle. He’s compassionate.”
