What’s Gross About the “Gross Clinic” Deaccessions

![]()
thomas eakins, two sketches in regard to the 1888 painting “cowboys in the badlands”dialect mayhap it’s time on the side of the joining of art museum directors to tosh its “criteria for deaccessioning and disposal.” these published guidelines are being conspicuously and recurrently ignored by institutions eager to acquire works that they believe they can’t pay to go to without selling other works important enough to have been displayed in their galleries.so it is with eakins‘ “cowboy singing” (image here) and the artist’s two sketches (above) for “cowboys in the badlands” that the philadelphia museum has sold to help hit for the same artist’s “the gross clinic.” these do not appropriate for the aamd disposal criterion of “poor quality.” that they are of museum quality is evidenced not only by their current open out at the denver art museum, but also by their exhibition history at philadelphia before that museum cashed them in. norman keyes, the philadelphia museum’s director of media relations, educated me:
“Cowboy Singing” has been on view fairly frequently in our galleries, generally in rotation with “Home Ranch,” and last in 2007. The two sketches were on display in gallery 118 over the last several years at least, on a wall containing a large number of studies by Eakins.
despite their similarities in make an estimate of and subject situation, “cowboy singing” and “home ranch” are different in composition and painting style and cannot be considered works that meet aamd’s disposal criteria for being “redundant or duplicate [with] no value as part of a series.” their differences in composition and execution make side-by-side weighing enlightening. the same can be said as a service to the museum’s five “badlands” sketches, of which two have any longer been dispatched online acomplia ivermectin to denver. to my mind, multiples can sometimes be considered duplicates; unique works, not. what’s more, the public’s former patrimony has now, thanks to these disposals, gone semi-private: the private anschutz collection (which has no public exhibition galleries) has acquired half ownership of “cowboy singing.” according to denver’s press let go:cowboy singing will be shared equally between the denver art museum and the anschutz collection, which has donated funds to help support the dam’s portion of the acquisition.and this transaction has involved half-privatization of another before overt situation, according to an earlier type of denver’s press release that is no longer online:through the agreement, the anschutz whip-round will receive joint ownership of “long jakes (the rocky mountain man)” by charles deas, acquired by the [denver] museum in 1999.it’s not homologous to “the earthy clinic” was in danger of being removed from the public domain. if the joint purchase by the national gallery, washington, and alice walton’s crystal bridges museum, bentonville, had been allowed to go through, eakins’ work of art would have been destroyed to philadelphians (who had largely ignored it until thomas jefferson university evident to sell it), but not to the greater american consumers.it’s interesting to note that the philadelphia museum has lull not chosen to exhibit “the gross clinic” together with the work in its galleries that it most resembles: eakins’ “the agnew clinic” (image here), on long relations loan from the university of pennsylvania. this juxtaposition might have diminished the sense of urgency surrounding the rescue of “the gross clinic,” by making it seem as much of a “duplicate” as “cowboy singing” is to “home ranch.” perhaps the museum does not want to encourage its visitors to draw that conclusion.instead, when the $68-million eakins returns to the philadelphia museum from the other regional institution, the pennsylvania academy of the fine arts, that also sold an eakins (to an anonymous buyer) to pay appropriate for its half-share, the painting hand down, beginning on

read comments (0)2008 NBA Playoffs: Nuggets/Lakers Game 4 Game Thread
This game is about heart. We will see what players on the Nuggets roster care and which ones do not. Phoenix was in the same situation in game four. They knew no one has ever come back and won a series after getting down three games to none, but all they cared about was making sure their season would not end at home at the hands of a hated rival.
Win or lose tonight, I just want to see some heart from this team. For two and a half hours put a stop to the soap opera backstabbing and high school musical drama.
So it comes to this. I am pleading with you Denver , show us some heart.
Make sure you head over to Forum Blue and Gold, the NBA.com Series Blog and the Los Angeles Times Lakers Blog for other game four insights.

Egan to Rudy: “Outta Line”

in the aftermath of the visit, it’s been noted in not a few quarters that five wide politicians on-record as pro-choice — house speaker nancy pelosi, sens. john kerry and ted kennedy of massachusetts and chris dodd of connecticut and former redesigned york mayor and presidential nominee rudy giuliani — received the eucharist at one b16 mass or another.within the hour, gotham’s supreme edward egan issued a statement on the taking of communion by the thrice-married ex-mayor:the eclectic church unequivocally teaches that abortion is a critical offense against the will of god. throughout my years as archbishop of new york, i have repeated this teaching in sermons, articles, addresses, and interviews without hesitation or compromise of any humanitarian. in which case it was that i had an understanding with mr. rudolph giuliani, when i became archbishop of new york and he was serving as mayor of new york, that he was not to ascertain the eucharist because of his well-known countenance of abortion. i passionately regret that mr. giuliani received the eucharist during the papal visit here in new york, and i will be seeking a meeting with him to state that he abide by our understanding.in its rejoinder, conspire rudy said it would freely permitted the meeting, but with a twist: giuliani’s faith “is a deeply personal matter and should remain confidential” according to his spokeswoman.the move is a dignitary change of public tack by the owner of 452 madison. in an early 2007 tv interview, when asked how he’d “come down” on public officials who defy church teaching — giuliani included — egan said that the politicos named were “all friends of reservoir.”"i wish them all the best, and they’ve been very good to us” the cardinal told wnbc’s david ushery.suffice it to conjecture, correlate and contrast.photo: ap/chris laputt-30-

Daring Bakers Challenge: Cheesecake Pops

More than 1000 cheesecakes pops are landing on the food blog world today, because this is the Daring Bakers challenge for April! It is no secret that cheesecake is one of my favorite desserts, seeing that I have made quite a few varieties in the past. I would even stock up on cream cheese when they are going on sale in the grocery stores!

Instead of baking one big cheesecake, our hostesses Elle of Feeding My Enthusiasms and Deborah of Taste and Tell have chosen the Cheesecake pops from Jill O’Connor’s Sticky, Chewy, Messy, Gooey: Desserts for the Serious Sweet Tooth as our April challenge. Readers, you will soon hear the resounding “YUM” from other fellow DBers that this is one delicious and fun challenge.

The original recipe makes 30 to 40 pops, which would be great for party. But seeing that we won’t have any party going on anytime soon, I have scaled the recipe down to 3/5. Most of them are brought to OCT lab, but I save some for snacking in the afternoon. I love that they are of the perfect size to nibble. It will still be less than the calories of 1 slice of cheesecake if I have eaten 2 cheesecake pops. And if I only eat one, that’s practically no calories consumed. (yeah, right..)

I have posted two recipes below; one is my scale-down version and one is the original. Remember to check out other fabulous cheesecake pops from my fellow Daring Bakers here. Thanks Deborah and Elle for the fun and delicious challenge. This recipe has both thumbs up from this cheesecake lover! xoxo.

DVD picks: ‘Friday Night Lights’ coming to DVD
“friday night lights” will be move in reverse for a third season, thanks to a deal between directv and nbc. fans last wishes as have loads of period to re-examine and analyze the promote season, thanks to its dvd release this week.
and there is much to ponder over in “friday night lights: the in the second place season” (universal, 15 episodes, $29.98).
the dvd extras include deleted scenes, an interview with the cast and crew at the william s. paley television festival and audio commentaries on three episodes: the season-origin “last days of summer” (comments by chairman of the board producer jason katims and co-executive fabricator jeffrey reiner), “are you ready for friday night?” (stars connie britton and aimee teegarden) and “there goes the neighborhood” (stars jesse plemons and adrianne palicki).
but any thought relative to the second season has to focus on the lay down lines, which in one case seemed designed to heighten the melodrama and give the lead more oomph in nbc’s promotional spots. that confused the profit of a critical character and the cover-up of the killing.
i didn’t correspondent to it when it unfolded on the air, and i prepare no more enthusiasm for it when it’s on dvd. it was not alone in indicating some rocky work on fnl - there also were uncertain turns in romantic lives - and made an unpleasant differ to some of the best work to be found on this, or any other, tv show in the current season.

The Digital Ark
If you haven’t already discovered it, ARKive, Images of Life on Earth is a vast collection of pics and video of endangered and threatened animals. In giving special recognition to “Earth week,” I came upon this in my (constant) search for cool animal videos for the 5-year-old. The stuff on this site is superb.
Backed by the BBC and many noted wildlife film makers and photographers, ARKive boasts the largest collection of animal imagery on the web. The quality is first rate and the site is loaded with educational resources and information. The video is generally uncluttered by silly narration and eschews the novelty, simply showing animals in action for the splendor of it. Similar video from sites like National Geographic or Animal Planet are only vaguely satisfying for the most part. Most are just clips of actual cable shows and are layered with the goofy narration you would expect. ARKive’s videos show animal video for the animals’ sake. Most are short and free of pretentious editing and voiceovers–like this one of fighting iguanas. Blow it up and make it greyscale, and it is right out of 10,000 B.C. (the original of course). Give a nod to the Earth with your offspring by taking in its bounty.

The vile state of Internet discourse knows no borders
As of February, China boasts more Internet users than the United States. But as anyone familiar with the vile state of online discourse — in any language — knows, an increase in the number of contributors to online bulletin boards and discussion forums is not necessarily a boon to society. In this respect, Chinese and Americans are more alike than they are different.
China Digital Times provides the latest evidence for this sorry state of affairs, noting that Jin Jing, the disabled Olympic torch bearer who became an instant hero in China for her efforts to protect the torch during heated protests in Paris, is now suddenly on the receiving end of a torrent of abuse.
Her crime? Suggesting that a Chinese boycott of the French supermarket chain Carrefour was ill-advised, because the victims of such a boycott would include the Chinese employees of Carrefour.
Cue the online hatred:
Netizen from Dalian: “This c*nt’s attitude is the same one the Qing rulers had after the Eight Allied Forces came. What was the result then? Are you capable of representing the Great Han Race? Do you what you’re supposed to do!”
The Eight Allied Forces comment is a reference to the end of the Boxer Rebellion in 1901, when the expeditionary forces of Austria-Hungary, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States put down the rebels, burned Beijing’s Summer Palace to the ground, and forced the Qing government to sign the punitive Protocol of 1901. So: Nationalism, racism, and misogyny, to the tune of historical grievances simmering for more than a century. English-language online haters better get busy — a new standard is being set.
